I would think hes listening in in a con call. Many calls I "have" to attend and don't have to pay attention to. As long as my name is on the attendees list, that's all that counts.

He could have been on an important call or online meeting. I use my earphones for work calls, and often I don't do much talking, just listening. I usually do these calls outside with my DD so she can run around while I'm on the phone and people have assumed I'm a bad mother listening to music or whatever, or neighbors will come up and try to talk to me.
