It's a state school that recruits VERY heavily out of state. Many UMC kids from this area, New Jersey, you name it.

I know three recent Miami grads. All are pretty impressive. All are preppy.

We visited when my older son was looking at colleges and I loved it. Pretty campus, defined college town, nice people everywhere. The scholarship they offered made it about the same or cheaper than in state tuition. He ended up at Purdue majoring in engineering so it wasn't the right for him, but for someone who wants a mid sized liberal arts school or business, I think it is great. It is fairly isolated, so some would have an issue with that.

Also there are quite a few threads in this forum about Miami. Do a search. This question has been asked before many times.

I am a Miami grad. Early 1990s. I wouldn't say it "flashed" then -- but it did benefit from the hype around a book called "The Public Ivies" that lumped Miami in with University of Michigan, UVA, William and Mary, and several others for being outstanding university education in a state-funded institution.

And Miami *does* provide a great undergraduate experience and education. It's a solid school. Generally attracts the best students in Ohio.

Strong architecture and business schools and pre-med.

Idyllic campus and location -- basically a pasture in Southwest Ohio about 35 minutes from Cincinnati, 45 minutes from Dayton, and 7 miles from the Indiana border.

Division 1 athletics. Known as the "Cradle of Coaches" in football for all the coaches who went on to bigger schools and national championships.

Birthplace of four fraternities and a major Greek system.

Negatives include an over-the-top alcohol culture and all the negatives that go along with that including a problem with sexual assault (I would not send me daughters there). And having to forever explaining to people that Miami was a university in Ohio when Florida belonged to Spain. Very white and upper middle class (its nickname when I was there was J Crew U)

J Crew U! Not a rich kid school. More like Midwestern UMC.

I am from Ohio and one of my siblings attended (as did many of my friends). Solid school. Very white and preppy. Greek life is big. Pretty campus. Everyone I know who attended has a good now. Not a school for everyone but for the right kid it is a good place.

I know of no fewer than 6 kids who will be going there next year, apparently a few with substantial merit aid. Looks like they are interested in bright kids from this area. What can you tell us about it?
