Yes, but the basic babysitting Fairfax sets up is just a wast of everyone's time. They will get sued for it eventually. When my child went (with reading IEP goals)they didn't even have any books. He was in a room with other kids his age but very different disabilities.

ESY is not meant to teach new things. The purpose of ESY is to help students retain skills from the previous year and that is the reason they are selected for ESY -- because they are at risk of skill loss.

If you are expecting your child to learn new things in ESY, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. That's not the purpose of ESY, ever.

agree. I thought MY DD was lying when she telling me what she did at school.

If your child really needs to continue the structure of school then do the ESY. It was great for severely disabled kids or kids with autism. Those teachers know what to do and make it work. If it is straight LD and you have the option of getting tutoring that is a much better use of the kid's time. Otherwise the teacher is a stranger and she will only focus on what is on the IEP while giving busywork the rest of the time. They all have different goals and different data that needs collecting, so that's all the teacher has time for. Plus the bus rides are long and then add in time for everyone to eat breakfast. I have taught it a lot. It won't hurt your kid, but if you have another option with rich, hands-on learning activities, or outside play, and can afford tutoring, do it.

Other kids in the county get cool science or drama programs. Our kids get drill and kill with no paper. Two boxes of crayons for 12 kids to share, and 3 glue sticks for the whole month. No library access or Smartboards.

Fcps esy is a joke. Not sure how they even justify it.

+1 and the kids aren't group by need, they're grouped by grade. Too many kids, wildly different educational needs and not enough planning time.

Yes, because it's needed. I drop off and pickup, so, no bus or long commute issues. This is our 3rd year for ESY and so far, no bad learned behaviors. MCPS

I can understand not wanting a long bus ride and not wanting to feel stigmatized, but what exactly do you mean by saying your child is "not special ed?" A child with an IEP is receiving special ed services at school. If your child needs ESY that is again special ed services. I ask this because I wonder if you have your own biases and you might be passing this onto your child.

We were offered last year and also will likely be offered this year, but I refused after reading enough negative info and seeing how long the transport would take. Instead we used a tutor for 4 hours a week on DD's most problematic areas and worked on her strength areas at home. Unless someone can't use a tutor, afford camp, etc I think that intense tutor time and camps are much more useful and enjoyable than ESY.

is your DC going to ESY Summer School?
mine isn't because he attend for 3 years and never did anything useful. What the did learn was bad behaviors from other students but that was all. ESY teachers only work on IEP Skills therefore he won't learn anything new. MY DS is CAT A
