Nurse here. We may not be as vulnerable when it comes to layoffs but we have to job hop every couple of years in order to leverage pay raises. Otherwise, we find ourselves training new nurses making more than the experienced nurses who stayed in place and remained loyal to one healthcare employer! Incredibly demoralizing.

OP I am a little confused by your statement.

Never once in my life have I assumed that any job was "safe". Everyone EVERYONE is replaceable.

Lack of a guaranteed job keeps you on your toes, makes you work harder and do better.

County government. The good ones have bumping rights. Still a horrible stressful experience, but you keep a job.

It's going to get worse. Jobs getting automated and plus competition against college grads. Wish you guys luck.

Sometimes layoffs are legitimate cutback and sometimes it's a way to get rid of under performers.

Agree with PP there is no such thing as a safe job, even a federal job. What is your industry? Successive layoffs at several companies tells me this may not be the best field right now. Give us so more details, with your skill set, and maybe DCUM can offer ideas of "safer" companies, sectors, etc.
