So is the consensus that 3.7 unweighted from private will get you into CMU but not if you're coming from public HS? We visited CMU recently and loved it. DC has similar stats but we're at public HS, although DC is not interested in CS or engineering.

How is your DD doing at CMU Engineering? Keeping up okay?

Wow, then a top private school really makes a big difference because that range is realistic there.

OP where does your DC's GPA put him in terms of class rank? Top 20-25% or lower?

If the kid has no hooks, this sounds right to me. 35 is a nice score on the ACT, but that UW GPA makes the top couple tiers of schools all high reaches (they are reaches even with perfect grades).

Those stats give you a good chance to get into all but the top state flagships, ivies and elite SLACs.

My hs senior with very similar stats (and also interested in science) got into UCLA, Toronto, and UMD (with merit at UMD). Didn't get into USC.

We're in MD, so I don't know how those stats would do at VA schools, but your child should have plenty of good choicss next year.
