Calvert County for the win!

Is it fresh water or salt water? When I think "beach", I think "salt water" - which is why I am asking.

2 hours max you are looking at lakes or the Chesapeake bay. If you want an ocean front beach, I'd budget at least 3 hours to get to the DE/MD/VA shore line. OC, MD is the closest and you can get there under 3 hours if you time the drive right.

Aren't the Delaware beaches all closer than OC MD?

That's ridiculous.

If you leave before 6:30AM on a weekday you can be at the Delaware beaches in 2.5 hours.

Over 3 hours each way. Good luck.

Rehoboth, DE, is closer and nicer than Ocean City.

We like getting a beach fix at Kentmorr restaurant in Stevensville, Maryland, just over the Bay Bridge.

Or go the other way to Calvert County - Chesapeake Beach, North Beach. Only about an hour away, depending where in NW you live.

Forgot to mention St. Michaels area -- not ocean, but bayside.

Ocean City is 2. hr. 40 min from Alexandria on a no-traffic day. If you live in Maryland, it might be close to your 2 hr. limit.

If you are looking for a sort-of-beach, you can do SandyPoint State Park --at the entrance to the Bay Bridge. Otherwise, there aren't any other beaches closer.
