I am in the same situation with my dd13. She watched the first 11 eps without telling me. Not sure what I will do and open to advice.

My 14 and 12 year olds are watching (with us). It is magnificently produces and gripping.

I asked my 14 yr old about this last night. She told me she doesn't want to watch it. She told me about it. I told her if she or someone she knows gets raped or wants to kill themselves she needs to tell a grownup. She said ok. Good talk.

Dd14 checked the book out of the school library. She won't be watching it anytime soon.

My 17 year old is watching and talked with me. Her view was that it was a positive thing for her to stop and think about how seemingly small events can be so impactfull. I think older teens are a great age for it if you open up the dialog.

DD14 is watching it. I pop in and out on occasion so I'm there if she wants to open a conversation, but neither of us are interested in sitting down to watch it together. I've read the episode descriptions just to be aware of things that could come up that she might want to discuss.

We have previously talked about a majority of the issues raised by the show (bullying, peer social dynamics, mental health, sexual violence, etc) just as things I thought were important to discuss around her age or as relevant to a given situation.

And two rape scenes. It's way off the mark for under 18 in my view.

I've been watching it with my 17 yo daughter. My 15 yo son has seen some but hasn't had much time since it was released for TV.

My daughter was required to read the book in either 9th or 10th grade, so she's familiar with it. I'd only read a blurb about it online before watching it.

It gets pretty intense towards the end. Netflix, I guess, has more liberties on what type of graphic content it can show vs. network TV.

It's opened up some good discussions on how even the smallest negative comment can have a big impact on the recipient. I can see how some of the earlier episodes could be viewed in school as a lesson on bullying and gossiping.

I might see if my kid still has her copy of the book and give it a shot. She told me the Netflix version is different from the book and it resonated more to see it on screen vs. reading it.

i think a 17 yo can certainly watch it alone. I'm watching it with my 14 yo but mostly because I am interested not because of the subject matter (which so far seems to be about all the ways you can hurt someone even if you're not really trying)

Have you talked to them about how they fell about this show? I don't think blocking them from watching it is an option if they are 17 but would you watch with them? so they know they're not alone?
