And here's something we do that most people didn't know you can do. I hate the thought of wasting $4.00 on a bottle of water at the airport so I usually freeze bottle's of Propel at home and take it with us on flights. As long as it's still frozen at the TSA line, it's allowed. Frozen liquids are approved.

It takes me 2 hours from leaving home until reaching the TSA line and you'd be surprised at how long it stays frozen.

If it meets TSA requirements otherwise if it's full size it has to go in your checked luggage or don't bring it at all.

OP here: Very helpful, thanks!! I had over 30 round trips last year and never tried bringing food because I used to maximize eating every local thing I could find. Unfortunately that's off the table for the time being.

Sandwiches are never a problem. When I fly from LAX to DC, I always stop and get In N Out for the flight, so I bring a Double Double and fries through security and nobody says a thing to me. I'm hardly the only person doing this, either!

I did get pulled for a bag check with a box of cereal in my carryon. But I bring a variety of fruit and sandwiches each time I travel with no issues.

We flew to Hawaii and had an entire roller bag full of groceries. Totally fine.

Solid food is fine. I always back a bag of snacks, especially for long flights with the kids. Granola bars, sandwiches, crackers, fruit, etc. Just make sure it's not anything that could be interpreted as a liquid or gel (I'd avoid things like applesauce).

We went through security at DEN last week with sandwiches, no problem. As long as it isn't liquids, you will be fine. I have taken yogurt through before but I know others have lost it at the checkpoint.

It is totally fine to take food through security if it isn't a liquid. you can fill a big bag with solid food and take it through. No problem unless you are flying to a foreign country that has agriculture restrictions.

Due to some recent medical issues, I think it's best if I take a snack/meal with me to the airport to eat at the terminal. If you have experience traveling wth food (likely just a sandwich, maybe a protein bar) without having a young kid with you, did you have any issues?
