Expose them to as many experiences as you can through reading and outings. Incorporate letters/phonics/reading, math and science in everyday task such as cooking. Talk to them and ask them questions to help develop their comprehension skills. Make them feel loved and special.

A wonderful resource of Prince Georges County is the library system. They have reading groups for all ages (French and Spanish too), robotics club, chess club, read to River for older kids, nature activities, Lego club, etc. I find something interesting to do almost every weekend. My kids and I have visited almost every branch.

Do some research on what is developmentally appropriate for a 3 year old. Go to open houses at the elite schools that you are interested in and ask them what they are looking for students when they enter kindergarten. That will give you a sense of what you are looking for in a preschool program. I think you will be surprised at what they are actually looking for in students at the kindergarten level and it is not always the 3 or 4 year old that can read- it is the child that can focus, play well with others, follow directions etc. I also suggest that you not stress your 3 year old out with attempts at overachieving because that can do the reverse of what you are looking to accomplish. Learning at this age should be fun so that they want to learn and aren't frustrated by learning. They have their entire educational journey to be stressed out about school. I recommend looking for a play based preschool. Go to the private/independent school posts because if you want info about the "Big 3" or some other "elite" school you should post there also.

That is awesome! What preschool did she attend?

So they can get into all of the elite schools that require entrance testing.

This isn't MoCo or NoVA.....go away.

So PG County people can't be over achievers? This is why we can't rise as a people. Small minded people like you.

So you think that 3 year old children need to "get an edge" and that doing enrichment programs is going to achieve that?

PG county people can be over achievers. We are just smart enough to realize that putting a 3 year old in a program to "give them an edge" is ridiculous and goes against recent early childhood development research. If you wan to give your 3 year old an edge, don't over schedule and let them be a kid.
Most of these classes give the parents a sense of superiority that they are doing the "best for their child" rather than actually benefit the kids in the long run. In other words, people do it to keep up with the Jones's rather than for the benefit of their kids.

Can you list some in the county that can give your child the edge? Just wondering if there is something that can be done to help at age 3 to have an edge.
