How is this complicated? Most of us have kids. We want to be able to have useable outdoor space. If we didn't have useable outdoor space, i'd save the money and hassle and buy a townhouse instead.

And why the hell would i want to make a garden on a slope? Do i look like an Inca?

Here? I think most people prefer flat lots bc they're more versatile. I just don't understand topics like this that just require maybe 35 seconds of genuine reflection by the OP.

It kind of depends on what you mean by slopes.

I tend to try to avoid homes that have slopes going towards them.

Then some homes are on lots where there are only a couple of feet of usable (flat) space and then a really steep drop off where you can't use at all. And there are some where you can have a lawn but can't really do anything on due to how steep it is. So have to deal with the maintenance and lawn care but can't actually use it.

The desire for flat lots are probably more for kids and maybe pets. If you don't have kids that are at the age that would run around the yard, it's probably not as a big deal to you.

sandbox, swingset, badminton, croquet, frisbee, throwing a ball around, and a million other things to do outside with kids.

The only thing a hill is good for is sledding. As long as it doesn't end in a road or a stream, that is.

And woods? Have you ever lived in the woods? I have.... It's hell on a house. Wears it out more quickly. The gutters, the shingles, the decks, etc. Not to mention the wayward branch that might pierce through your roof during storms. Some trees are fine. Woods are not.

Play set for the kids - need at least a flat spot somewhere in the yard.

Because they don't want their basement to flood.

Ugh, mowing a hilly lots is miserable. I physically cannot push the lawnmower up and down our hill.

We can't have a swingset, because we don't have a large enough flat area to put it.

My hobby is dog agility. I can only set up 2 or 3 jumps in our tiny little flat area. Ideally I'd be able to set up a full sequence of 18 obstacles including 20 foot long ramps.

But alas...the flat yards in our neighborhood were $50k more than hills for similar houses. We got a hill.

I love to garden and a flat, sunny lot is the first thing I looked for. Slopes are more work.

Everyone wants a flat yard with grass unless you're lazy or one of them hippie assholes who let weeds growing out of control

I love hilly wooded neighborhoods, and I noticed most people here look for flat lots.

I love gardening, and I think it would be more interesting to have a lot that slopes. We also have a dog and he will play in either a flat spot or not.

Why are people obsessed with flat yards here? The only thing I could think of that needs a flat yard is a soccer game and I hardly think people here are hosting soccer games. What am I missing?
