No top talent does SO anyways. It's true in TJ and it's true in Longfellow.

You have no idea what you're talking about, if only judging by the number of kids who try out and the large portion that gets turned away.

What makes Sci Olym happen at one school and not at another?

In some schools, it is lead by parents; in the stronger schools, it is lead by faculty (year to year continuity).
The schools listed in the links where those that made it to state. There were regional tournaments. I am more familiar with division B (middle schools) as I volunteer to coach an ES team in one subject area (es & ms are in the ms division).

My kids were the top performing ES!

Does the faculty get paid at the ES level or do they volunteer?

This I do not know. I am not a teacher, but a volunteer (scientist). I would not talk about the compensation with the teachers.

So what is your definition of "top talent" and why do they not do SO - esp in middle school?

The winners, Fairfax High and Longfellow Middle School, will represent Virginia in the National Science Olympiad Tournament.

I am particularly proud of some of the ES teams that outperformed some MS teams.

Link to results. See second page for HS results. As expected, Fairfax County dominates SciOly.

Congrats to Fairfax SciOly! They have a terrific program there, and are sponsors of a much appreciated excellent Invitational Tournament every year.

Congrats also to last year's winners Langley.

By quite a points margin too. Really impressive. Congratulations to the competitors!
