I think the posters who say you can't go are wrong. I'd think if you begin at PK4 and get in through the lottery, you're fine to stay, just as many of those families who got in through the lottery are already OOB. But if you start at K as your by-right-school, of course you can't stay.

So this is what is confusing me.

(page 8): "If a family moves out of boundary during the school year, the student maintains the right to attend their current school through the terminal grade, and can continue to attend schools in the feeder pattern of the original school. They also have a right to attend their in-boundary school."

That certainly sounds like the kid gets to stay.

But you enroll in K as IB if you are when you give your address. But sure, I could see someone trying to use that as a loophole.

Depends on the principal. For now it seems they generally let kids stay but there are no guarantees.

There's a lot of pressure to deal with crowding at these schools and Deal/Wilson.

Oyster does not let you stay.

The current Principal at Janney does not let you stay (I assume families are grandfathered if allowed by the previous principal).

Yes. You prove residency and in-boundary status every year. The fact that your child might get in for PK via the lottery doesn't mean anything special, unless you applied to the lottery as OOB and got it. Then you have a right to stay. The rule is that your once-inboundary child gets to stay until the end of the school year. After that you no longer have a right to stay at the school. Your options are to enter the school's lottery as OOB or work with the principal informally to see if your child can stay.

Doesn't matter. It is up to the principal.

Based on feedback here, Oyster doesn't let people stay. You can also lose the spot for an excessive number of tardies or unexcused absences.

Yes. Every year, you need to provide proof of residency to re-enroll. If you move out of bounds, you will not have IB residency proof and it'll be up to your principal. The only difference is if you get in somewhere out of bounds in the lottery. Then it doesn't matter where you move, unless it's out of DC or in boundary.

I keep getting different answers to this from different people. I'm sure this has been asked before but I'm not having any luck with the search tool.

If my kid gets into our in-boundary DCPS for PK4, but later, let's say two years from now, we move out of boundary, can my kid continue at the same school, and then through the feeder schools?

My current reading of the lottery webpage indicates yes and I have a friend who said she called and was assured that that was the case, but I know someone who swears it's up to principal's discretion.

Please help.
