Lots of kids had different answers. And quite a few with the "wrong" answer got in. They are looking for thinking skills as evidenced by what you write as opposed to the right answer.

My son thought it was easy and solved it pretty simply. But he is a math nut. Didn't use more than 1500 characters. For others, they may have had issues.

DS was accepted but says he thought the problem was tricky, because there was a way to solve it and then a more advanced way to solve it. maybe the answer itself wasn't as important as knowing and identifying a different method of solving the problem.

It was asking for both. Formula is some number (can't remember) to the power of years.

I don't think the right answer matters as my kid didn't get the formula but was still accepted.
