My child is dyslexic and homework takes longer so homework was an issue. I have found that most schools have the ability to have a lighter schedule but most parents load their kids schedule because college counsellors say top schools look at strength of schedule.

Parents especially load up freshman and sophomore year to leave room for an immense number of unnecessary AP's senior year.

I stuck to the basic schedule with study halls and it has been very manageable.

I would love for my kids to go to a school with really smart kids *and* good quality of life. I think OP asks a great question.

+1. Not every kid can thrive in a pressure cooker environment.

Not really sure that it's a plus, but Field certainly has a reputation for many kids having little to no homework most nights.

It's completely reasonable to look for a school that is not a pressure cooker.

One of DD's friends loves Holy Child.

Holy Child in Maryland is known for being less academic. Girls who struggle at other schools seem to find it manageable. I have no firsthand knowledge but know girls seem to select Holy Child if they're looking for a less intense place.

OP here - thank you re Field

What about Burke?

I know that it depends on course selection, but trying to get a feel for the independent schools that might not feel quite as intense overall.

Our friends' daughter is at Field, and her mother reports that the homework load is very manageable.

I cannot think of any! All high schools have a lot of homework--

If you want less stress pick any high school and take less crazy classes

Which independent high schools (VA & DC; co-ed or girls) have the lightest workloads? Recognize this will be by reputation only since it's difficult to compare.

Looking for a HS that might be lower stress than some of the most competitive schools. Strong counseling program also a plus.
