Because it will spur development in Haymarket. Instead, you've just driven up the price of housing and increased crowding in Manassas.

This. Rail spurs development near stations and will get cars off the road. Toll lanes won't do that. If anything people will be complaining and moaning when tolls get up to $30 one way on 66.

Don't believe it will happen...look at the tolls on I-95 on some evenings going to Stafford

I think that area is already served by several nearby stations.

Eh. No real plans for "transit oriented development" in Haymarket that I know of.

The extension priced out too high. Plus with the I66 tolls, there will be new bus service out there - and the big new VRE parking lot at Broad Run. So you would be spending a significant amount of $$ to keep cars (of those not using the express bus) off I66 for a couple of exits (few were going to walk to those stations). I am all for more transit, but sometimes things just don't pencil out.

There's way more money in tolls than selling train tickets. McCaulife HATED the idea of extending VRE.

This would have given people living in Gainesville and Haymarket another object getting in and out of the city. Don't know why we as a nation continue to fund other things but let our infrastructure fall behind. Philadelphia, Chicago, and Boston have great commuter rail service in their areas in addition to weekend service. The best our leaders can give us are some HOT lanes with a ridiculous expensive toll. To quote our current president "Sad!".
