My kid doesn't play any sports. She spends her after school hours doing volunteer work since middle school in two areas she is genuinely passionate about. Is not playing sports an issue?

What does hooked and unhooked mean in terms of college admissions? Tried to google it, but all the results were about tech.

NP here, apparently it's Lincoln-Douglas debate. Looks like there are multiple debate formats out there. I found a comparison on Stanford's website. https://snfi.stanford.edu/select-the-right-program

Sorry, yes. Lincoln-Douglas debate. It's sort of in the middle of the spectrum in terms of debate types. More accessible than policy, more serious than public forum or parli. Moral philosophy/ethics focus compared to other formats.

I think the teacher recommendations are key for "unhooked" kids in the better ranked colleges.

Got into one of HYPS early. (Excellent SATs + other std tests; top 3rd of class at competitive magnet, but very strong math grades.) We were pleasantly surprised; thought grades/class rank would sink her.

DC's ECs were incredibly weak - debate club (totally bogus - debate did not compete on a serious level at private school - I don't think they even competed against other schools), 8 week summer service project in foreign country, JV Soccer 1 year, Track 3 years, Student Buddy for a Freshman, "president" of a school social club that met a handful of times - that's about it). DC was admitted to 2 top 30 schools which was shocking - we attributed this success to lack of boys and other portions of the app being strong.
