What exactly was weak about the response from the administration? These two jackasses that did it were arrested immediately because the administration worked swiftly with the police to identify the suspects.

What communication are you looking for from schools regarding safety?

They just generically said safety is their priority and that the staff continues to be vigilant. Obviously what they're doing did not work. Even without specifics, I would expect them to review procedures and improve upon them, in cooperation with school and police experts. I also would expect that they would make counseling resources available for those who are upset and need to talk about this. I also expect the school to be deeply troubled by this, and not use the same form letter used for every incident. It was a very bland and callous response. The school bears some responsibility for student safety.

I finally found a posted copy of the letter MCPS sent to parents, and yes, it was sorely lacking. As for FCPS potentially doing the same (sending out weak communication) if such a horrific thing were to occur at a school, I disagree. I'm an administrator in FCPS and there is a very clear formula we use when writing such letters (typically called "backpack letters.") The letter is composed of 3 sections: what happened, what the school is doing in response and what the parents can do. This is a standard operating procedure. The MCPS letter missed out on the second part: telling what the school is doing in response, i.e. reviewing procedures, posting staff in hallways, offering counseling, etc.

I have no idea whether anything happened at Edison. Call the school on Monday if you're that curious. What I do know is that with regard to lockdowns and secure the building, it's POSSIBLE that one of the following occurred:
--The school had a lockdown drill. All FCPS schools have to have several each year.
--There was reported police activity nearby in the community, and all staff and students had to stay inside. They were free to move about the building, but not permitted to go outside.

There wasn't. If you're a parent you may want to look into the difference between "secure the building" and "lockdown."

Anyone know why there was a lockdown at Edison today?
