I haven't been able to check for sure, but my guess is that the whole DC college tuition assistance plan is on President Bannon's chopping block.

Isn't this a federally funded program?

DC didn't make up the rules about citizenship, Congress did. We all know that that part of the requirements isn't something DC would have required if it had a free hand to make up the rules itself. If there are going to be a lawsuits against the program, Congress might decide it's easier to end it and spend the money elsewhere.

I also wonder about the whole legitimacy of the complaint. She attended Emerson, a private school that charges $29,000 a year. It is very small and barely has an endowment. Very limited financial aid is available, and it is only given based on a combination of merit and need.

One would conclude then if her family's finances were so limited Montgomery college tuition is not within reach, they could pay only a very small portion of Emerson's tuition. She would have needed to be very bright and academic to have received aid for the rest. That profile is not consistent with a student whose ambitions are limited to attending just a community college.

So the whole story is just off and the suit looks a bit trumped up.

Even if it is all that she says, she could just attend UDC a four-year university where a lot of aid is available.

Zero sympathy here. I'm a unicorn on this board--an HYPS whose kids go to UDC.

If residency is established through the parents for all applicants, this student must be required to follow the same requirements. If you begin making exceptions, you must make exceptions for applicants claiming DC residency, but parents living in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, etc.

No experience. It seems wrong on its face. I imagine the rules were written this way to ensure that the TAG program is aimed at people who are actually from the district, instead of people form other states who move her for school. But there has to be another way -- proof of paying taxes or something.

Post this in the DC Public and Charter schools board and you'll get more of a response.

Hello everyone!

My name is Patrick. I'm a radio producer at WAMU. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on this story from the Washington Post. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/a-us-citizen-is-denied-college-aid--because-of-her-mothers-immigration-status/2017/03/05/8e38adc6-fded-11e6-a51a-e16b4bcc6644_story.html?utm_term=.3e18c7167d75

It is about a girl who has been deemed ineligible for a grant because of her parent's immigration status. I wonder if anyone has any experience with this, or if you have strong feelings about this.

Let me know!
