OP what's your maiden name start with? You could do a nickname from the initials, like BT would be great for a Bitsy. Or BB, Betty from BT, Birdie from BD.

Totally forgot Bobbie! People called her that as well.

The Barbaras I know are nicknamed Barb or Barbie. I can;t imagine calling a little girl today either of those, so maybe commit to Barbara without a nickname or try something like BB or Bari...

Bea? Just using the first letter of the name as a nickname. We have a Jay that we got from the first letter of his name. Developed organically, but we like it a lot.

Love Babs. Barbie?

If you can get the lively young Barbara Bush to replace her grandmother's white-haired image, you might discover a rhythmic classic with an interesting history.

There is the popular third century St. Barbara, who was reputed to have been imprisoned in a tower and so became the patron of architects, stonemasons, fortifications, and geologists. Barbaras appear in works by Dickens and Thackeray and, most notably, as the idealistic protagonist of the George Bernard Shaw play Major Barbara. Noteworthy bearers include actress Barbara Stanwyck (born Ruby), novelist Barbara Pym, TV's Barbara Walters, and "My Name is Barbra" Streisand. Barbara Gordon was the original Batgirl in the comic books.

Barbara entered the Top 100 in 1913, and then the Top 10 a decade and a half later; she held the Number 2 spot from 1937 to 1944. At this point in time, Bebe, Bobbie, or Babs might make a cuter retro nickname than Barbie.

Bottom line: Though she now seems to have a terminally middle-aged image, the classic and lovely Barbara will eventually make a comeback.

I'm Jewish and we often just use the first letter of the relative's name when we name after them, or give the full name as the middle name (which I understand is not an option for you). My husband's grandfather died just before he was born and his parents thought they were obligated to use the full name, so he wound up with a pretty awful name and cool middle name. It really should have been the other way around.

So you could pick something like Bettie or Beth or Brangelina - or just name her Barbara and call her... Bebe? Bizzy/Busy?

I like Barb quite a bit as a nickname.

Go for it. She'll have a unique name for her generation and thank you later.

Hey everyone,

I am currently 8 months pregnant and trying to make a final decision on a name for my little baby girl. I would like to name her after my mother - Barbara- who has passed away. It is also very traditional in my family's Greek culture to name your children after the grandparents. So, it would be traditional and also in memory of my mom.

I know the name is not really in the top lists at the moment and sounds old fashioned ( most Barbaras I know are around 60+) but what do you think?
WHat about any cute nicknames? Not BABS!!! In the Greek the name is pronounced Varvara and doesnt have the old-timey connotations.

I want her to have my maiden name as a middle name, so Barbara cant be a middle name

Is Barbara back for a revival or should I reassess??

Thanks for your opinions.
