If he is a homebody, do not plan an activity for him to don on his birthday. Ask him what he wants to do that day and follow through on that.

You could ask your DH. I was in the early stages of planning a surprise party and my DH mentioned casually that he just wanted his two college roommates to come for dinner with us. So we did that with a BBQ and a carvel cake. It was what he wanted and it was low key and fun.

I am like that, no party. All I wanted was a day without our kids and got it. We hired someone and had a glorious kid free day, an all day date. First time in FIVE years.

I'm an introverted homebody. I would like a good movie or Netflix show, a dog to pet, and some good food. I could be enticed to venture out of the house for the food, but high quality pizza or bagels would also hit the spot.

OP- I have this same questions. My DH's birthday is coming up and I have no idea what to do. Thought about inviting a few other couples to dinner, but even that gets out of control (big and expensive) quickly. normally I would plan a activity but he's having surgery soon and will be incapacitated for a while.

Kids are young - 5, 3, and 1. We're in NoVa.

How old are the kids? What kind of things does he normally like to do?

For my dh, I would probably plan something outdoorsy like a hike and make it special with a nice picnic with food favorites and a bottle of wine. Maybe pack a party hat and some balloons to blow up if younL want to be goofy. Have the kids write a speech or a toast.

Or theatre, event if it's kids theatre, but everyone gets extra dressed up.

Or a throwback to bday parties when we were kids and go rollerskating or bowling, with an old schooL birthday cake like fudge the whale and 80s type snacks like doritos. Do you know where he had a favorite bday as a kid? Try to recreate aspects of that.

You know how for a first bday pinterest always shows a banner with 12 pics, one for each month? Create one of a time line of his life. Doesn't have to be every year.

Does he have a favorite restaurant? Go there or do take out and serve it on the good china.

Ha - he gets what he gets - same old me. The babysitter is 65, so probably not his speed in any event.

Are you asking for a family activity to celebrate his birthday? How old are your kids and where do you live?

My DH is an introverted homebody who would hate a surprise party of any sort. I still want to make it fun for him, though. So far, I've booked a babysitter and hotel room for the weekend after his big day. I would love more ideas for what to do with the kids on the day of, etc.
