A lot also depends on breed, OP. Some dogs are high energy.

Our puppy is 8 months old and hasn't had an accident in months. She goes out in the morning around 7-8 am. Gets a walk around noon. Then out again around 4 pm. She goes in & out to our backyard in the evening until 9 or 10 pm.

My experience is that at about one year, my pup goes out 4x a day and can be left in the home uncrated in a closed area for short periods without mishap (not counting chewing). But I am conservative because I don't want an accident, only success.

My small dog is fine in the house from around 7:00am until the kids get home at 4pm to take her out. She has toys, food, water and a companion. No destruction or mess. An adult dog would probably be OK, a puppy would just have a piddle and chew fest.

Your schedule would be fine if you hire a dog walker to take it out in the middle of the day (and you adopt a house-trained adult, not a puppy). take it out right before you leave, right when you get home, and right before bed. I'd recommend a less active breed and a medium sized dog (some little dogs need taken out a lot but my 17 lb Chihuahua cross is fine with this schedule. Also my 20 lb Jack Russell before this was perfectly OK with this schedule.

Honestly, my adult German Shepherds would be perfectly happy going out in the morning (around 7am), late afternoon (5:30ish) and late at night (10pm). I sometimes have to force them to go out with me mid-day. Lazy beasts.

HA! lazy beast! not sure i could hire a dog walker, and as someone who has never had one before, it just seems strange to me! i had a backyard growing up so we let our dog out all the time, he was also a hunting dog and just loved being outside. i don't think i could handle a puppy, i have one kid and don't miss the newborn stage at all LOL

Don't be sad- you can always get a dog walker or daycare for dog.

At that age, mine got 5 walks a day, didn't go more than 3 hours without a walk.

20:45, adopt a dog that is at least 4 years old. Don't adopt a dog that age.

10 months and 60 pounds. Four times a day is plenty. Right when you get up. Around lunch. Mid afternoon. Right before bed.

How big is the dog? Does she have accidents if you stretch the time?

If your dog is approx 10 mos. - 1 year, how often does he/she need to go out? I still find myself getting mine out every 3-4 hours (except overnight, of course), but I'm wondering if this is still necessary.
