This, x1000. When I switched from phoning it in on the treadmill to doing HIIT with some moderate free weights, I lost 20 pounds over about 8-9 months.

If you don't like weight machines try routines that use body weight resistance, whether HIIT, circuits, power yoga or Pilates. You will want to do something for toning but it does not have to be weightlifting per se.

You should really consider HIIT-type cardio. Much more effective than straight running/elliptical/bike, and more time efficient.

if you do it right its both and you may gain some weight at first..dont focus so much on a day to day scale number go by how you look how clothes fit. Its much easier to trim 500 calories from the intake than it is to burn that much.

I have lost about 10 pounds doing the treadmill and rowing plus lots of long distance walking. I also have modified my food intake (started by tracking it) so I had a better idea of what I was eating. I have no added some weight training on my days off from the treadmill - very light and probably not going to do much but felt I need to do something to keep things interesting. I find rowing to be an excellent full body workout - more so than the treadmill so I'm getting a nice arm workout from that 3 days a week.

+10000 As we get older reducing the food intake is more important than the exercise.

Weight loss is 100% what you eat. I find it easier to lose when I am doing cardio because I can eat more, but most people wildly over estimate their calorie burn from exercise.

Weights are great because you can move so much better when you are strong. It's fun to be strong.

I do t use machines because I find compound barbell movements more efficient. If you want to lift, Google StrongLifts, Nee Rules of Lifting or Starting Strength.

Your weight is 80% what you eat; 20% how you exercise.

Every body is different and responds to different regimens differently. Play around and find what you enjoy most - that's what will work for you for the time it will take for you to lose the weight. Good luck and have fun!

Strength training is necessary, but you can do strength exercises other than those using weight machines. Check out the NY times 7 minute workout for a start.

I need to lose 30 lbs. Can I achieve that by doing cardio (treadmill and rowing machine) only? Or do I have to use weight machines?
