Regarding Richmond, there is a fair bit of civil war museums and history in the area. I don't know your interest levels or that of your kids. My DS would be thrilled with a civil war weekend. Also have gardens, the state capitol building, and science museum.

Another option is Norfolk / Virginia Beach. Tour the USS Wisconsin, MacArthur Memoria in downtown Norfolk, Botanical garden. If the weather is good, play at Mount Trashmore or walk on the boardwalk at the beach. We also went to the Mariner's Museum in Hampton Roads and did a boat tour (naval base cruise) in the Chesapeake.

Is Richmond worth a 3 day trip? We have been to Kings Dominion and the children's museum as day trips. Never spent the night.

FCPS has a 3 day weekend. Looking to drive somewhere for a 3 day weekend. Originally thought we would do Great Wolf and Williamsburg but we ended up going there President's Day weekend. We went to the Poconos/Camelback during winter break. Have plans to go to Baltimore in April and Philly/NYC in June.

Anywhere else we can go? Preferably a resort with a lot of fun activities within a 3-4 hour drive.
