Come on pal, Gonzaga recruits as hard as any school that is out there. You think some of the kids on their football or basketball team give too shits that they are attending a Catholic school.

Not a hook?

It doesn't have to be. It's pretty much assumed.

I don't think I have seen a school that is so typically and obviously a Catholic high school.

Well, they take a fair number of AA's who are frequently not Catholics.

But I doubt many other non-Catholics apply. It's traditionally been a very Catholic place. They don't call them "The Eye Street Irish" for no reason.

There are some non-Catholics for sure. VP Dan Quayle sent his sons there. But they are a small minority in a sea of enthusiastic Catholics.

Being Catholic is not a hook at a Catholic school.

Sometimes legacy and the connections of their parents weigh in on admissions as well.

My friend son's got in and received a merit scholarship (so I assume his app was very strong. He was coming from a Catholic school but I doubt many others from his school applied because of the location.

Gonzaga is becoming more and more difficult to get in. My DS came from a public school a few years ago. No legacy, no athlete, great HSPT, essay, recommendations, and Catholic. I guess we lucked out. I know some boys from the school at our parish that didn't get in and there was definitely some questions as to why a public school kid got in over them. You just never know what they are looking for, but my guess is that they are striving for balance.

Then he got blocked by legacies at his specific catholic school.

He should meet with his principal (or headmaster) to understand.

Was he coming from public? Or an ADW school?

It's a numbers game. If he was at school X and that school had 10 kids that applied to Gonzaga with 5 legacies and that school has a history of sending 2-7 kids to Gonzaga, low chance.

If he is coming from school Y and 3 kids applied and the school has a history of sending 2-7 kids to Gonzaga and he has good scores, good chance he will get in.

You need to look at your specific situation not the whole application process.

Talk to your principal to understand if you want to know why you did not get in.

Just checking to see how admissions at Gonzaga went for next year. A friend's son didn't get in for 2021. Was it a big year for legacy etc? No need for bashing just asking the question.
