As long as the writer is not insisting on visiting you at home or asking for $$, I don't see anything bad in these messages.
Same thing and same experience. I don't find anything sinister about this. I've never found a family connection but I've exchanged emails explaining what villages my family is from, etc.
Why would you consider this a "long lost relative"? He's simply asking if you might be related because you have the same rare last name.
The index of suspicion and drama is way too high.
