Glossitis of the tongue is common with iron definciency. That was my main symptom when I was diagnosed with celiac disease.

I just lost my ability to eat anything spicy a few days ago and I really want to know why. My favorite foods are all spicy, but I cannot stand more than two bites of anything spicy, even mild foods. It’s not that it tastes bad. Actually I don’t even know if I can taste it, because I end up in a bit of pain. There has to be an explanation, but I can figure to out. The only thing that has happened during the same time period is, for the first time I have been retaining water. Everything is swollen from my feet to my stomach with water weight. I can’t see a connection. I’m 51, take a med for acid reflux.

What was happening in your life when this developed? Did it happen after eating Asian food or Asian ingredients? Were you using a new stainless steel coffee mug? There have been similar threads in the recent past. Strange.

This happened to me when I took penicillin. Are you taking some kind of medicine?

Sometimes its a sensitivity or allergy developing over time to a specific spice(s). Not usually dangerous, just annoying.

I find this very weird because at 60 my sense of taste and smell have diminished with age, so I have to really spice it up to get a kick.

I have dry mouth that has gotten worse over the years. It had affected my sense of taste and sensitivity to some food and some wines. Started about age 45. Not much you can do about it either.

I have always enjoyed spicy food. However, over the last month or two, I've noticed that whenever I eat something spicy, my tongue (specifically the front 1/3) begins to burn so much that I simply can't continue eating. It's almost like my tongue is damaged. visually it appears that there are a few lines/ridges on my tongue where the sensitivity is centered. Is this a thing? Does this happen as people get older? I'm 47. Thanks.
