For the record, I'm a Maury parent and fine with my kid going to Miner/Maury. I don't love the commute, however.


If you are suggesting that the commute from Maury to Miner is the only issue, I am going to go ahead & call BS on you actually having a kid at Maury. It's like a 5 minute drive. Less if you hit green lights. The distance is not the issue. It's the difference in quality between the two schools


Presumably it's the difference between being able to walk (or walk on the way to public transport) and not. Miner is the wrong direction for anyone heading to the metro from the Maury zone. Maury is a fairly small boundary, so the bulk of kids get dropped off on foot... The commute to Miner would definitely complicate that. It's not as ridiculous a consideration as you're making this sound.

I suggest you email Charles Allen (callen@dccouncil.us) Don't waste your time contacting DCPS. I hadn't heard anything about it until today and my family is also very worried

Are there any more meetings on this any time soon? We are an inbounds (and were inbounds prior to redrawing the boundaries) family with a younger than school age child and are really concerned about this.

You're absolutely right—Maury is great and parents DO stay—but that will definitely change if it means they have to send their kid to Miner after Kindergarten

Great, let's accelerate the same dynamic that causes parents to quit DCPS before middle school!

Right because we all know that taking kids from a high performing school and sending them to a low performing schools will not impact them at all. You should work for DCPS! Or maybe you already do? LOL!

Make Maury an early education childhood center. Miner is a big school that can accommodate Maury. Don't close Maury though just so it can become another charter school. How many elementary schools are on or near Capitol Hill? Some of the students could go to J.O. Wilson, Ludlow Taylor, and other nearby schools. What do the test scores look like at Maury?
