What?! You seriously buy your son new sneakers ONCE A MONTH?! My DD is in 8th grade. She gets two new pairs of sneakers each summer. THAT'S IT. She can look and talk about them all she wants, but I'm not giving her more than I'm giving her.

Son is a freshman and has been into sneakers since 5th grade, He is into the high end ones now. I told him straight out I will buy him a pair for his birthday and Christmas. So he saves all his money to purchase his own if he wants them. It is hard to argue with him about the sneakers since I have a ton of shoes. I do like shopping with him though, its how we bond.

I suggest modeling appropriate behavior if this bothers you. It's not exactly reasonable of parents to have, say, 30 pairs of shoes either.

My 12-year old loves high end indoor soccer shoes. They cost a fortune. We buy him a couple pairs a year.

My DS started his sneaker obsession in 9th grade and it seems to have slowed a bit (now halfway through sophomore year). I think he realized that it was just unsustainable because he doesn't have that much of his own money and I'm not buying him sneakers outside of a pair at the beginning of the school year and maybe for his birthday and Christmas. He has traded with friends a couple of times. Still, there are at least 10 pairs of sneakers in his closet.

You're lucky he only wants a new pair every 30 days given how frequently new kicks are released. For some people, the madness ends in college. For others, like myself, it never ends. (I'm a female, fwiw) Your son may well become a sneakerhead like me, and there's nothing wrong with that. Some people collect trinkets, I collect kicks. (But I also have the money to support my habit) Be glad that he's into sneakers and not other things as it's not a bad or negative thing. And hey, maybe you'll get excited about a few releases yourself if you take the time to get into it.

Don't worry, when he's an adult, he will own exactly two pairs of dress shoes: a black pair and a brown pair. The number of sneakers/trainers will go down, too.
