The one time I had to serious eye roll a smash cake was when it had fondant instead of icing. The kid couldn't break into the cake! So so silly.

We just did a cupcake. My DD had no idea what to do with it and did eat a little but was mostly overwhelmed by everyone staring at her while she was in her high chair.

Back when I had kids, it was called a cupcake.

Smash cakes are cute. It's just so the baby can have his/her own tiny decorated cake for smashing and eating. It's completely optional and nobody is going to judge you for having or not having one.

Back when my oldest turned 1, Giant had a deal that if you bought a sheet cake then the smash cake was free, so we got one. It was cute, but I didn't even do one for my other kids.

What? I had a smash cake when I was 1 in the early 80s. Nothing new about this.

We have pictures of my dad eating his cake with cake all over his face in the 1950s. Only the term "smash cake" is relatively new.

Smash cakes can be cute. Just because it's the first time a baby has had cake and sometimes they really enjoy putting their fingers in it. A smash cupcake can be just as cute.

FWIW 75% of 1st birthday parties I've been to have the baby screaming and not enjoying the smash cake or not knowing what to do.

It's for the photo of baby smooshing cake while still having a pristine cake for guests to eat. Alternatively, make or buy cupcakes, and give your birthday boy one cupcake.

For the kid to smash their face into it and get frosting all over their face for pics.

My son turns one this spring. What exactly is a smash cake that I see all over pinterest and instagram? We are doing a small party for him at our house, just close family and a few friends. I was thinking we'd do just one cake for everyone- he'd have a piece of this one. I know I don't have to do a smash cake, but what is it for?
