We went in July a few years ago. One of my must dos is to spend New Year's Eve in Reykjavik -- some day. Check out the blog iheartreykjavik. She has loads of information about what to do. She opened a walking tour of Reykjavik a couple of years ago and that is on my to do list for when I go next. There is a Hot Golden Circle Tour that we did not do and it includes a visit to the secret hot spring. That is on my list as well. Here are a few things that I enjoyed when I was there in no particular order.

Pingvellir National Park -- I am a lawyer and the site of the open air meeting place of the oldest Parliament of any western democracy was awesome for no reason other than the history. When WWII ended, people in Iceland showed up spontaneously there to celebrate.

Gulfoss -- wow

Westman Islands -- amazing story and beautiful history and the natural harbor is incredible

Neighborhood swimming pools

May to October otherwise freezing.

what about going with 2 kids, ages 7 and 10 to see the northern lights in March? Too cold? Has anyone done it?

We did wish that we had booked a volcano tour in advance. You can take a helicopter and then ride an "elevator" down into an inactive volcano. That was the only thing we didn't get to do that we wish we had.

We did the volcano tour. At the time (2 or 3 years ago?) you couldn't take a helicopter. We walked 2 miles across a lava field to the staging area, and then hiked up to the crater and took a thing like window washers stand on to go down into the volcano. The weather was horrendous even in July (freezing, 50 mph winds). I seriously thought I was going to be blown off the mountain when we were climbing to the crater. It was definitely an unforgettable experience, but it wasn't my favorite thing to do in Iceland.

We went in November; days were short, but we still did a lot and loved it. Recommend Icelandic Farm Tours and their self-driving tours.

Summer, unless you are going to see the Northern Lights. Glacier hike was the best thing we did, hands down.
