In any case, we figured we didn't need to pay for yelling. Can get that for free at DCPS. Actually, we've not encountered that at DCPS, though can well imagine it exists.

Any grown up yelling at an eight year old should be barred from the classroom. Not only does it show inability to control the classroom and create an environment for learning, but it also traumatizes children. This teacher should be fired.

Agreed.
But I would like to add - we had a 3rd grade yeller last year. We talked to the principal who talked to my kid and then separately raised the issue with the teacher and the situation improved. The teacher did not know the conversation with the principal was instigated by me, it remained anonymous. That was at the Principal's suggestion.

I have a middle school child, so I've been down this road once already. Is this worth me telling the administration about? I'm sure others have probably had issues with her style before. Are there any mean yellers at your private? If so, can this be fixed?

Absolutely should address it and tell school. It's not acceptable behavior.

We left our school because it's infamous for its yellers...rather than redirect children, teachers would 'scream' ... mostly on the playground, in the lunchroom, during line up--
It was awful to witness. Studies show that it takes children 20 minutes to 'recover' from being 'yelled at' ...

Leave that school if things don't change. Your poor child.

We are now at a school that's a dream...kind teachers, strong leaders. No. Screaming. Ever. Good luck.

Why not email the teacher (or the teacher and head of school) and ask for a meeting to discuss "concerns you have about the classroom communication and the classroom environment?"

Completely agree. If true and really a raised voice, teacher has no business being there--or in any other school.

Take every story that comes from your kid or other parents with a grain of salt. Every one. And then talk to the teacher.

We had this problem and escalated it to the head of the school. We had to pull our child mid year. Try to have your child moved out of that teacher's class. Typically, the child goes from sad to angry after dealing with a teacher like that. Many kids regress (want to sleep with their parents). Some people just should not be working with kids. Always support and believe your child. We had a lunatic teacher at private. Be an advocate for your child, speak up, and don't wait. Your child cannot defend himself in this situation.

Hey there. Does "yelling" really mean "yelling" -- as in raised voice/shouting? Or does this mean somebody who corrects kids directly and forcefully? If it is the first, I'd be more inclined to complain. If the second, less so. In either case, would it be worth trying to get a meeting with her to talk about the interactions directly with her -- not reporting her to the boss -- to say that the child feels intimidated and see if she's got it in her to modify her approach where there's a kid who isn't responding well?

Good luck.

Not OP but she said that he was doing it in AM before school. My understanding is as long as homework is done before school that it doesn't matter when or where you do it?? Sounds like a control freak.

Depends on the school...some administrations don't care or are not capableof doing anything about it.
I would talk to the teacher first and say your child will shut down if he doesn't feel at ease. If it doesn't work, escalate it and go to the Principal and counselor.
Maybe most importantly give your child tools so this behavior doesn't affect him. Let him know that this behavior is not something aginst himbut it's the teacher's inability to control herself. Help him become stronger against adversity, this said, teacher should always promote a respectful atmosphere for all.
Have something good come out of this bad.
