People who in the majority are often ignorant about people in the minority. People in the minority usually have to be knowledgeable about those in the majority in order to survive. What you say about Protestants is often true of whites with regard to other racial groups, for example.

My great grandfather was in the Klan in Elkins, West Virginia a hundred years ago. There weren't any black people there so they targeted Catholics instead. My grandmother left for DC as soon she turned 18 and married an FBI agent .

They think they are more evolved, both socially, intellectually and spiritually superior. In my Protestant church they cite Catholic theologians and other thinkers without mentioning they are Catholic. They elect to forget where they came from, but the Protestanr churches can still be broader minded than the Catholic Church (not individual Catholics) Signed, ex-Catholic

Catholic here: my mother always used to say "protestant" like it was a slur. She is college educated and well traveled, but it didn't do anything to broaden her view.

I was raised in the southern baptist church and was taught that Catholics worshipped Mary, idols, etc. Didn't believe Jesus could forgive sin without a priest, more other nonsense than I could even try to list. I became Catholic as an adult when my kids were attending private Catholic school. We were just so impressed with the teachings at that particular parish. I am an interfaith minister but still love the Catholic Church. As a child and even young adult I remember being told that Catholics weren't really Christians. This despite the fact that the Catholic Church was the first Christian Church.

It all comes down to education. When you choose to open your mind and grow spiritually, you find sacred worth and truth in all faith paths. Sadly, many people are terrified to do that. The threat of eternal damnation is terrifying. Many see questioning as sinful.

It really depends on how you were raised -- your parents, influence of other religions around you, your interests.
