When I got off the plane to meet my ILs for the first time, I suddenly had a horrible case of the hiccups.

My parents invited my future in-laws (at the time) to join us for the weekend at a beach house in the Outerbanks. My in-laws brought a loaf of some bakeries cinnamon swirl bread as their contribution to meals, and made french toast one morning with it... when they left they took the rest of the loaf. When I type it out it doesn't seem that bad, but they have a habit of being pretty cheap and don't mind letting others host them. It was just so awkward the next day when my mom was looking for the bread to have for breakfast!

The bread incident was kinda just the beginning, they are who they are and in general I like my in-laws. But my parents won't be hosting them again anytime soon.

Probably when my FIL walked in my me nursing my firstborn, and said, "Oh, sorry. Um ... can I help?" and then he looked HORRIFIED at what he'd said.

Somehow I managed to stay mature and say "Actually, a glass of water would be great, thanks." And he left the room.

When my MIL saw my engagement ring, which is a very simple 1 carat oval diamond, she would NOT stop admiring and talking about it. She still, to this day, calls it "the rock." Now, it is beautiful, and I really do appreciate that my husband bought me a beautiful ring that I love, but in no universe does this ring qualify as THE ROCK.

She talks about it every time I see her. She acts like it is the Taylor-Burton diamond.

This is far from the worst, but the very first time I met my future MIL, she announced that she wasn't wearing a bra and then cackled. That should have been my warning.

Hmm, where to begin?

How about when I met FIL and MIL for the first time and MIL repeatedly asked me what language I spoke, whether I spoke Hindi, what language my parents spoke, what language did we speak in the house, etc. By the way, I was talking to her in english.

How about at our engagement ceremony hosted by future IL's where MIL physically dragged me around their house telling me to touch her friends' dirty feet.

Or was it the time that FIL was dying of cancer and MIL looked at DH and said in front of me "when are you moving DIL in so she can start taking care of FIL?" I was studying for the bar exam at the time, DH was living in his own condo, I was living in my own condo, and future 40-something SIL had decided this was the perfect time to move out of FIL and MIL's house into her boyfriend's house.

The first time I went to my ILs for a visit, before we married, MIL had been wearing resistance tights, and had been trying several things to improve her circulation. She had gotten it into her head that she NEEDED to walk/shake/move/stand up every 15 minutes or so.

So when we were just a few minutes into our first real sit-down conversation, she springs up and starts walking around the "loop" of the first floor of their tiny house in circles. It's a small house, so the path from the sitting room to the kitchen through the bedroom hallways and back is very short. So she could still hear us and still talk to us.

It was just crazy. I didn't know her AT ALL, and every few minutes, she'd spring up mid-sentence and start zipping around. Once, she jumped up just as the coo-coo clock started coo-cooing, and I just lost it, laughing so hard. It was bizzare!

We called to tell my parents we had gotten engaged, and my Dad said to my now-husband, "Well, I guess you're going to get a special dessert tonight!".

My Dad loves dessert, so he actually meant a piece of cake or something (we hope). But, it came out sounding like something so sexual that it was awful. DH and I laugh about that to this day.

Before we were married, I started jaywalking and my FIL pulled me back and said "We don't want to lose our DIL". MIL corrected him to "Future DIL". Possibly hoping the wedding wouldn't go through.

My FIL is a bad cook who has very odd tastes and ways of "doing things" with food.

He made an extremely watery beef stew once. On a very hot summer day.

And served it on plates.
