Memory and processing were much lower, not sure that means anything
Verbal was same as the overall score-121.

I'm almost certain it will be a denial and I will have to appeal.
I'm leaning towards not including the wisc. At least not now.

Wrong! CogAT is not a cheap WISC. They don't compare, actually.

Ok. I post a lot about my kids on this forum and our tester, but it's because I want to help other parents. I should just open a consulting agency for the AAP process and how to write a letter. But...Here it goes.

In my opinion

No WISC is ever too low.
A low WISC can often identify underlying issues
2E kids are being recognized as a group who greatly benefits from AAP
2E does not equate to ADHD kids, only. This is a very popular misconception. It's wrong!

So...
1.

If your child's WISC is below 130, and there are discrepancies between the 4 main areas, as for a GAI score.
Verbal and Perceptual numbers are a better indicator (stronger) for gifted intelligence.

True story. All of my kids were in pool and all are in AAP since 3rd grade. Not all got in first round. One of my kids scored 119 on the WISC. But an issue was identified - low processing. I wrote a letter about 2E and how they are often missed by schools. I did research and quoted studies. Child got in on appeal. Child is doing wonderfully!

If your child's WISC is below 130, and there are no discrepancies, still appeal with the WISC. I would hesitate on 120 or below.

2.
Writing a strong letter is imperative. Include quotes from great thinkers, philosophers, authors, etc that tie into what you want to highlight about your child.

3.
Apply every year. Get a WISC every year. Do not test through FCPS after the initial testing. If your kids bombs the CogAT, it's forever in their file and could possibly be used in determining entry.

4. Add letters of recommendation to your appeal. Provide the letter writer a copy of the GBRS scale and ask them to write a letter that corresponds to a rating of 4 for each category.

Some people are always gonna hate on parents who appeal or refer. Ignore the haters. Do what is BEST for your child.

Never offer WISC in referral. Save for appeal only.

These are my opinions. All of my kids are in AAP. All were in pool. I did appeal for some (not all).

I'm the op. The problem is, aap is so inflated at our school, my child is left with a peer group that does not fit. She is extremely bored and the pace of gen ed is not working. I understand my child is not gifted, but I'd prefer her in the advanced program to barely learning in the only other option.

If fairfax county and our school had only the gifted children in aap there would be one aap class and not 3 in our grade.

I'm torn on submitting the wisc because it isn't in the gifted range, I know that.

Hang on there...there is nothing this person has said that would indicate her child needs pullouts. I think this is what upsets so many people about the AAP process: an expectation that her kid SHOULD get something.

I'll add that her kid's professed boredom is indicative of nothing. (If it were, don't you think many parents would claim their kids were bored in order to receive additional services?)

With a 121 Wisc and not having submitted last year, why not submit? Talk to the teacher,, get an idea if the school would support it. In the meantime, can your child get pull outs?

I'd submit 125 - 95% is not shabby

Child is bored in general ed. We did not submit last year.

I wouldn't submit a score that is lower than the nnat or CogAT score UNLESS it showed some kind of processing or working memory issue but subs cores were really high otherwise.

I probably wouldn't submit anything lower than 128 overall, unless one of the subtests was exceptional. I honestly don't know what the 'right' answer is though-- I'd assume that 120 would be the bare minimum.
