Our Ortho says no gum...Or popcorn...Or nuts...Or chewy things. You will know if it causes problems as he will lose brackets etc .

A hundred years ago (ok, really 30 years ago) when I had braces, my ortho said I could chew Freedent gum.

I'm the OP. Relieved to hear braces won't be an issue. Now we just need to figure out the palate expander.

Orthodontist told us no to bubble gum, but ok to chewing gum. DS has had braces for a year + and chews gum on occasion without issue. He also eats popcorn.
Evidently times have changed since I had braces 30+ years ago.

Yeah, there are gums which tend to me more braces-friendly. Not ideal. But you could try. Of course an orthodontist will say no -- try it on your own.

My son chews gum with braces. I think wads of cheap, sticky gum, like Hubba Bubba, would be an issue. Single pieces like Stride or Trident, no problem. (only know about with braces)

No gum, you're right. Have you tried mints? My son does ok with the Life Saver mints. Not as good as gum but better than nothing.

DS has sensory issues and chews gum throughout the day. It's been a huge help for him at school and home. He will need a palate expander and braces in the near future which means no more gum. Has anybody else been through this? I'm looking for a substitute for the gum. Or is there an option for a palate expander that is removable? I know Invisalign might be an option for braces but it doesn't sound like he will be a candidate.
