Np here. That is addressing the substance of your post. We know nothing about you but this post. You made an error and we're judging you for it. You don't know much about this teacher, but you're judging her for not knowing the author of one book. You know that you are better than that typo, we're saying that elementary school teacher shouldn't be judged as deficient because she didn't know Dickins in a trivia game. Don't want to be judged? Don't be so judgemental yourself.

I have three Master's Degrees and I am a 15+ year teacher who has taught elementary. I would have had no clue who wrote Great Expectations. I am not worried at all that I don't know this.

Were she a high school English teacher, I'd give it to you, but I'm more concerned that elementary school teachers have a strong understanding of child development and learning theory than know the author of one particular book. I've got my Ivy League degree, and I could see myself blanking on that one in a trivia game.

Meh. I have plenty of teacher and other friends who don't know a lot of things like that if it's out of their subject area. It's upsetting on some level and on some I've let it go. This is a symptom of intellect and knowledge not being valued as much in this country as being able to make a deal or whatever. But then someone will chime in and say how is it useful to know authors and other "trivia" when you can just look it up if you need to.

Played Trivial Pursuit with some friends the other night and one (a 4th grade teacher) had no idea who wrote Great Expectations. I consider this essential knowledge, not trivia, especially for an educator. This person has a masters degree (in elementary education, I assume) and has 20 years of experience. Is there really any excuse for this?
