It costs practically nothing to be a member so test it out for a year. You can always quit.

Best thing is the 10% AT&T Wireless discount, which makes the membership pay for itself.

A lot of the AARP Magazine content is online and free.

After 8 years I have concluded that, for me, it is not a good value and I will not be renewing. It never really was a good value and I should have cancelled earlier. The discounts are not that great. AAA discounts are much better. You can still get a lot of information from AARP even if you are not a member.

Magazine is decent. They do send your name to all their affiliate sales like insurance etc which as noted above is a pain. We always forget to use the discounts and you can probably read the magazine online for free. But if they do any lobbying for SS and Medicare then the low cost is worth it to me.

Similar discounts to AAA, but politically active in the opposite direction.

This. Even if you don't "join," the organization is like an octopus with leeches on each leg. They don't let go of you, even if you make numerous requests to be removed from their advertising lists. Lots of junk mail.

I'm joining and I'm 49. So they will fight to retain Medicare and Social Security.

55/53 couple here. Got a letter from AARP today asking us to join but not sure... What are the benefits of joining AARP? Do you think it's worth the membership?
