It's not uncommon OP especially for families with kids to help remind them of the meaning of Christmas and to help them understand the meaning.

There's nothing wrong with it. Why do you feel offended? It's Jesus's birthday. Celebrate with cake and song. Not your thing? Ok, but who are you to be pompous about it?

I think it's a cute idea, minus all of her sanctimony of course.

Yes, some people do this. When I was little our church had a cake at Christmas Eve mass and they would cut it up and give each child a piece. We always loved it.

BTW, your hostility seems a little over the top.

I wouldn't call it a tradition but I have seen a Jesus cake in many Baptist homes. Tastes good.

Wowwwww.

She wins! Because she is so not thinking about you right now.

Yea I wring my hands over her not thinking about me. Lol. I'm not worked up about it..are you all illiterate? I think these crazy "you just hate your SIL" responses are a hoot!

This has nothing to do with a birthday cake. It has everything to do with your feelings towards SIL. Why you're making it about the cake is beyond me. It's just stupidly petty.

We did this growing up. We went to church every Sunday, but by no means overly religious. We would have a Christmas Eve birthday cake and all the little neighborhood kids would come over. It was a tradition I remember fondly. We've done it a few times with my kids. It is the celebration of the birth of Jesus, so I'm not sure why you're so bothered by it. The whole day of Christmas is celebratory and not at all solemn for most people. I think you just don't like your SIL.

Do you know how to read p.p? I said we don't go to her house. I just wondered if this was an actually thing or if my SIL invented it.

I've heard of this. She's trying to keep the Christ in Christmas without being a Debbie Downer. It's her thing. If you don't like it, do your own thing.

You do you. If it bothers you that much, don't go. Don't accept their hospitality if you are only going to judge and dislike your hosts.

Is this a thing? She has a cake made by a fancy bakery and that is the only dessert that is allowed into her house on Christmas Eve or day. Luckily we don't do holidays with her anymore so we just know from MIL and SILs sanctimonious facebook posts with the cake and bible verses to show us just how good a Christian housewife she is. I have never heard of this and I think it is rather demeaning to JC to have a birthday cake for him. I think his birth is a solemn and spiritual occasion and we mark it by reading the story of his birth and being thankful and kind.
