Google summer volunteer opportunities for teens in the area you live in or area of interests. For example if interested in any sort of health car field, one might apply for summer hospital volunteer program. If you son is shy, but a good solid kid, have you thought about having "him" on your neighbor list.serve to do say lawn mowing, pet or even regular pet walking during the summer. Also, the idea of being a "parent's helper" to a family with a couple of boys might just be a great outlet - a little money, ability to grow in his own self-esteem seeing he can interact and handle younger kids, and maybe able to do some informal sports without having to be super at them. Another idea is that some times County run summer camps for kids and teens with disabilities look for volunteer peer role model campers.

Also 15 might also be a good age to take an interest class in something related to career interest or possibly to explore a new area or just to develop a personal interest in something one might persue lifelong such as a musical instrument, photography, some aspect if technology and media, art, cooking etc.

Likewise, if he has not had the opportunity to do so as yet, a one or more weeks away at camps related to interests might help him gain new skills and experiences just as a normal part of growing and stretching one's wings.

Are you in MoCo? Red Wiggler farm is an organic farm in Germantown. It takes high school students as volunteers in the summers but likes a summer-long commitment.

Volunteers help with all aspects of organic farming and conservation, and working with adults with developmental disabilities, who are employed on the farm.

He's definitely learn a lot. It's not a huge operation so shyness won't be too much of a problem.

Who do you know OP who owns a small business and can give your kid work experience / internship positions in the summer?

I would look at what your kid likes / doesn't like and compare that with who you know, first.

Then the cold calling - applying to places where you don't yet have a connection.

I know that NIH takes volunteers throughout the summer and they do fill up.

15 is young. We sent out kid to sleep away camp as a CIT. not right for every kid, but right for us.

If s/he had a camp they really liked when younger, volunteer there as a counselor-in-training. My DS started that last summer at age 13.

What is your kid interested in? There are tons of things out there. Let interests be the guide. I was a lifeguard, like OP suggested. I volunteered at a library several summers. Red Wiggler Farm in MoCo has volunteer opportunities and it likes a fairly long-term commitment for the summers. Check with local government if your kid has any interest in those things. Council, Police Department, etc. I think Lockheed Martin runs a summer intern program, but I don't know for what ages.
