Are you dumb? It's a business tax. The business is in DC, therefore, it's a DC business tax. Employees won't charge an extra fee for employees.

Um, how? I support the bill, but it's a .62% tax on the payroll of DC businesses. You can't charge MD or VA b/c there can be no commuter tax.

In every possible way this is horrible legislation. Is some leave ok? Of course. But they could have thought through many alternatives to treating D.C. businesses as piggybanks for free money. How about insurance or savings plans for some of these contingencies? How about examining how much of these benefits go to out of state residents at D.C. expense? I am so annoyed with all of our comrades on the Council. To see them take care of themselves "better" just fits what we know of unbridled socialist rulers.

This comes with a new tax on businesses. Not so much money to give more after the benefits budget is diverted to the tax.

I've worked at Biglaw in DC, where they give 26 weeks of paid maternity leave (although not everyone takes it, for various reasons), and a fee, with no maternity leave or STD.

I'm of two minds about this new law. I wasn't aware that the council members got a higher benefit. That doesn't look very good.

Federal government worker. No parental paid leave. None.

Complaining about anything sounds like whining. However DC government should offer the same as rest.

I'm genuinely curious what other DC residents think because the news reports love this new paid leave bill. What they decided to do was force all of us private employees into this new government benefits system where we can only get up to $1,000 a week.

Meanwhile, they voted to keep their own benefits with absolutely no monetary limit. Council members already make a 160,000 salary, and they'll be collecting their $3,000 a week, while I now have to live on $1,000?

If these so called progressives really cared about social justice and our most vulnerable so much, why don't you join the rest of us regular folk, cut your benefits and donate the proceeds?? They're so smug about helping the needy, but yet they're only doing it with MY money and keeping their own? I really hope Bowser vetoes this bill.

The Council is giving us 8 weeks parental, 2 weeks self care, and 6 weeks family care at $1,000.

I get full pay - 8 weeks maternity, 12 weeks self care, and 12 weeks to care for family, so I'm definitely losing. My nonprofit gives me my full salary if I go on leave. I'm not rich, but I'm in the high 90s, which is over 2,000 a week.

What do other people get for paid benefits?
