The average GPA at GMU is a 3.66 and the 75% SAT (new scale) is a 1310. They accept 66% of applicants and the OPs kid is comfortably above average stats wise; in what way is it a reach?

I have to second the PP's comment about oddities with JMU/VT admissions. If anyone has any insight, I would be curious as to what is going on there. At DD's FCPS, everyone says its harder to get into JMU with the exception of VT/Engineering, abd that you need nearly 4.0. Is that true?

We have looked at some state schools in PA and Ohio with out of state tuition costs <$14k. A few have been in the $10k range. The PA state schools seem to have comparable tuition rates to in state VA.

More a comment than an answer: JMU or VT. Over and over I see students get into one but not both - and it's very, very odd even their stats - like it's orchestrated.

Guaranteed with a certain GPA. If OP's kid struggled to get a UVA worthy GPA is HS it's not guaranteed that NOVA will be different.

Not based on my experience. It depends on the types of classes your DC takes...AP/IB....a 3.4uw/3.8w is very solid for these colleges. My DC got in EA to GMU with similar GPA...took many AP courses.

JMU, VCU, ODU, Tech, Mason, Mary Wash.

I know two students, same HS, same GPA, one did arts, no sports, and got into JMU but not Mary Wash., the other did sports, not arts, and was the opposite. Sometimes it's a "who knows?"

Or you could always do two years of NOVA and do the guaranteed UVa admission.
