I don't understand why this is controversial. He uses every legal method to decrease his tax liability even if it means paying no taxes.
I do the very same thing - obviously not in the same income league but I also pay very little in taxes though my income is substantial. I have the benefit of an excellent tax accountant and tax lawyer.
It would be dumb to pay taxes that one can legally avoid.
