I got my husband the 23andme one as well. It was $100.

I had native American DNA and knew nothing about that.

So is he Sephardic? Because the Ashkenazi have significant European admixture dating to the late medieval period.

NP here... can you tell me what company you used to do the DNA test? This sounds like something my husband would love to do.

I haven't done it, but 18-year-old DS asked for this for Christmas. So 23andme is wrapped and under the tree, LOL.

Okay, Rufus. Time to give the laptop back to the one with opposable thumbs.

DH is from Peru and is a large chunk Native American and Spanish/Italian...which we knew. What we did not expect was the 12% British Isles and 7% West African. He is also 4% Ashkanazi Jew, but there was family lore that it existed.

Mine was what I expected 46% Ashkenazi Jew through my fathers side, 15-20% British Isles (my Mom was adopted and I have taken multiple tests, so it depends on the test), 20% Western Europe (most likely German) 11% Finnish, and a hint of Iberian Peninsula thrown in for good measure. Then trace amounts of other stuff.

Yes I found I had Norweigian ancestors - who were likely Vikings given I was born in England. We knew about other input but didn't know about that one.

Ha, no surprises here. Our family has lived in rural NC/GA for as long as we have written records. We're about 90% British withsome Irish and French (likely a Huguenot ancestor).

I found my biological family on my bio-father's side. My bio-mother did not remember his name so I thought we'd never find him.

I contacted his family, who were responsive, but he thought I was trying to scam him and will not communicate.

Both my husband and I were surprised by our results! I definitely recommend doing this!

Yes and no. I did the test and during the waiting period found out my mom and a paternal cousin had too. (My dad died many years ago.) I always figured I'd come up roughly half Scandinavian and half British. Both my mom and cousin had significantly less of these nationalities than I expected (though my more recent Scandinavian ancestors are on my dads side). When my test came back it was in line with what I expected with 47% Scandinavian and 36% British, 5% Irish, 5% Iberian peninsula and the rest Western European.

I was surprised because it was so different from my mom and cousin...I expected more overlap. I spend some time thinking about it and thinking about what they're testing for and realized they're testing for specific markers in your DNA that are common to certain regions. I happened to inherit some specific markers for Britain that other family members didn't. Doesn't mean they're not British in heritage, just that they inherited the European markers instead. So because your husband inherited Jewish markers doesn't mean there's no European mixed in along the way, just that he didn't inherit those specific markers.

We did ours. My husband to my surprise has almost no European DNA, he is Jewish.
I had native American DNA and knew nothing about that.
