I've only stayed in two - one was truly a B and B (a room in a house with full breakfast provided) and the other an apartment that the occupants seemed to live in infrequently. Both were clean although in the apartment there was definitely food and other things, and there was shampoo in the bathroom. Both had cleaning fees and I know the house actually had a professional cleaner. Air BNB is definitely an adjustment relative to a hotel.

OP here-- it's an elderly couple's home. They are not currently living there, but not clear how long they have been gone. The daughter met us there and gave us the key. She lives close-by. I might just send her a message today asking if I can throw out the food. If we were only staying a night or two, fine. But after a month that food will be gross and clearly they aren't going to eat it. Thanks to everyone for their replies. I wasn't expecting a luxury rental, but at a minimum I thought trash would be emptied. I'll stop whining and deal with it!!

Not normal but if it was the cheaper option then you got what you paid for. More pricy options usually have a cleaning fee that's used to hire a service to clean between guests.

We just moved in to an Airbnb for our first day of a month-long stay. The owner left their half-used bar of soap and shampoo in the shower. The bathroom trash was overflowing and there is random old take out in the fridge. This was one of the cheaper options, so is this just a case of "you get what you pay for?"
