I took a $6k pay cut job in Houston because of commute. 80k to 74k. It was a difference between a 1 to 1 hr 30mins commute and a 8-10 mins commute. Very easy decision. Better quality of life. I was not going to drive to crazy downtown Houston everyday.

Absolutely, in fact I took a 5k lower offer when I worked in Atlanta to avoid the 1.5-2.5 hour, 25 mile commute. That gives me back roughly 4 hours of my day, 20 hours a week. Dividing my salary by 60hrs per week instead of 40 really makes it seem paltry.

Eliminating the work commute alone saved me about 1000 miles per month on my car/12,000 miles per year, as well as the extra oil changes, brakes, etc.

I no longer update a work wardrobe, so thats about $1,500 per year, plus saving on dry cleaning.

Being home for deliveries, services, having the ability to run to the chiropractor or the pharmacy down the street, have also made my life so much easier.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Factor in the cost of gas, maintenance on your vehicle, an office wardrobe, office related costs (breakfast / lunch / etc), and I bet you that will add up to more than 4K in a year. If it does, as I suspect it will, take the cut and work from home. It's amazing.

I would, but I enjoy working remote.
Cost savings:
- Wear and tear on car (I don't commute- so I put less than 10,000 miles on per year). My car is 10 years old- has less than 90K miles. My next door neighbor has similar mileage - his car is 3 years old.
- Gas
- Drycleaning (my drycleaning used to be $100 per month - it is now zero)

In addition- there are quality of life issues:
Daycare - 5 minutes from the house
Home for repairs and/or delivery
Easy to schedule dr's appointments
I can throw a load of laundry in the wash in the am, move to the dryer at lunch and it is done at the end of the day.
Dinner prep can be done at lunch time if need be

I am a big believer in actually working during your telework timeframe - but it is really convenient not to have to commute.

I would do a cost comparison and figure out exactly what you would be saving on transportation, office clothing and any other incidentals you can think of. Also, consider the amount of commuting time you would be saving. Time = money. How stressful is your current commute?

4000 from what? From 20k or 2 million. Big difference. And what do you save by not commuting? For me, I would save 3 grand at least.
