Your cat could get very sick and die from drinking sap water. Reason you should have a fake tree.

Mine isn't messing with our tree at all, he's not quite 1 so I'm pleasantly surprised. Is there a problem with the pine sap/water that is bad for the cat?

It dries out the tree which causes the needles to drop and also makes the tree a fire hazard.

I would just keep the foil there. That's the only real deterrent I could ever find that worked. Too bad it doesn't come in red or green!

At least your kitty isn't climbing the tree and getting stuck like some.

Why does it even matter?

How about using a mesh (like the plastic mesh bag limes come in?)

What if you added some vinegar or something to make it taste bad?

That's what I'm using now. I was just looking for something more attractive.

I cut a piece of a cardboard box to cover it. Seems to be working.

We have a large stand, like this: http://www.midlandhardware.com/865974.html?gclid=CNyWhKfL59ACFQKBswodaxEM-g

Most tree skirts have tiny holes in the middle. Do I just need to get a really big one so it still hits the ground after going over the stand? I'd consider getting a new stand next year, but we are too far along to reset the tree.

My sister sprayed her tree with apple bitters. Seems to be working.

Does anyone have a clever tip or contraption that keeps their cats out of the Christmas tree water? Right now, I'm using aluminum foil and it's not pretty. It's effective, but it's also a PITA when I need to add water.
