This really bothers me that people don't know who he is. Neil Armstrong gets all the credit for being an American space hero. I truly believe behind John Glen's mission, the Apollo 8 mission was the most risky and dangerous. Bill Anders, Jim Lovell, and Frank Borman flew on the first mission to LEAVE the orbit of the earth. That, to me is even more risky than landing on the moon.

My three kids (youngest 8, oldest in high school) know all about John Glenn. They spend a lot of time watching shows about the space program.

My ninth grader not only knew who he was but went on to talk about Yuri Gagarin, the first Russian to orbit the earth, and that Glenn was the first American. He also knew he was a Senator.

My kid reads voraciously.

well my kid knew. I confused him with Neil Armstrong at dinner and I was corrected. He didn't know that Buz Aldrin was in Antarctica recently, though.

Such is the state of education today. I'll bet they know who Wiz Khalifa is and can name all the characters on Game of Thrones.

I asked 3 high school kids in the car pool today (one of whom is waiting on an Ivy leagues ED acceptance letter) No one could even id him as an astronaut. I was shocked.
