Read the article in today's post. As written they go to anyone who works in DC, regardless of where they live. Calculations are that fully 64% of these taxes levvied on DC businesses will benefit non D.C. residents. It's scandalous legislation from ultra liberal Elisa Silverman supported by all but two of her fellow councilmembers. This is their priority these days.

The final.vpte hasn't been made . Mayor Bowser is iffy on this. Make your voice heard. Only two councilmembers (Evans and one other) voted no. Male your voices heard!

This is a true disincentive for nonprofits and even trade associations to locate over in Arlington rather than DC, with the resulting increased payroll tax on employers. Law firms may stay, but at the margins, this really increases costs for businesses and organizations, and those who can, may move. It would be one thing if DC offered near the same benefits as neighboring jurisdictions, but in this case DC is just pricing itself out of the market.

It will also likely increase discriminatory hiring practices against women of child-bearing age.

I am so tired of paying more in taxes than most people make. Now how much are my taxes going to go up for this crap? What the hell is the point in passing something that doesn't even mostly benefit DC residents?

And considering if you work for the government and are a DC resident you can't benefit, this whole thing looks even less intelligent.

Agree with this. I pay a lot of money in taxes, but I get jack in return. These a-holes aren't focusing on the real issues that affect most people who live here.

Pass this bill. Politicians don't understand that businesses that can move, will.

Big empty office building in Rosslyn just waiting for DC to screw up what has been done. With Bowser as mayor it is highly likely that the city will revert.

Agree - benefits should be for DC residents only. Also- is it just me or is 2 weeks paid sick leave pretty excessive? Seems like there is potential for abuse there. Let's give our local businesses a chance. All the new retail here is a big part of what's making the city attractive and resulting in net population gains. Let's not screw that up.

Ugh! Ugh ugh ugh! All I want is a livable city where everyone's interests are.looked out for including actual residents and the businesses we need here. Who is this at large rep elisa Silverman who wrote this bill? Is she representing DC or Portland? Everything about this act is half baked including that we have nothing in place to oversee this program. Also, we don't have a.commuter tax but are now shelling out benefits in the opposite direction? I mean, c'mon! I'm pretty horrified. I will be calling my councilmembers and the Mayor today to voice that this one needs to go back to the drawing boards. Our council seems only capable of enacting ultra liberal legislation; incapable of examining liberal legislation that doesn't work - like the DC criminal youth rehabilitation act. Once its here, its here. I dont know who is well represented by this act. Not DC. Not our businesses.
