It sort of works on a sliding scale, the higher the GPA the lower the SAT can be. You should also have him take the ACT.

What is his GPA?

I know he is not going Ivy but this will give you an indication of where he stands.

Also, you can have your son call the assistant coach (or whoever has been communicating with him) or have your club coach call the coach and ask what SAT score they need to see.

If his grades are good and he is a hard worker, he should be fine for most colleges.

He's a recruited athlete at 2 D1 schools and a bunch of D2/3 schools. The issue is that the D1 school he wants to attend has very high academic standards. The above helped, thanks!

The scale was designed so that 500 (on each section) was supposed to be "average" for the SAT-taking population. It doesn't exactly work out that way, but the scores that you list are definitely well above "average."

IMHO, it's a decent score, but unlikely admission to UVA. What schools are on your child's radar?

I don't knowing the score is in the 93% of all test takers is particularly helpful. Instead, I'd start by googling the Common Data Set for a variety of schools the student may be interested in. Part C of each set will have the middle range (25%-75%) of students enrolling at the school for the prior year. Keep in mind that a lot of kids whose stats are at the low end of the range have hooks, like being a recruited athlete.

I pulled up the one for UVA since that's a school a lot of posters here are interested in. Here are the SAT stats for those enrolling for 2015-2016:

I don't know who this person is who runs this site, but that is precision at the expense of accuracy. 6 decimal places? I suppose his SAT did not have a question about that.

I would pay good money to get such a score for my son who gets mostly As in honors/AP classes but doesn't seem to have a nack for tests like these).

It won't buy your kid admission everywhere, but it will buy him admission at many good schools.

Op, if the math can be pushed to beyond 700, I think that would matter somewhat. That will probably be luck, several attempts, rather than additional prep. It's probably only 1 more question correct. I think scores over 700 are particularly impressive.
