Can someone describe what makes it difficult? Is it working 8 am to 10 pm nightly? Is it bosses who are screamers? Is it the type of environment where people are on your case if you come in at 8:45 one day or go out to lunch for an hour or work from home once in 3 months bc you have a doctors appointment in the middle of the day? Is it that you must be available via email/remotely work 24-7 the way that they do in biglaw and IB?

Or does it vary so widely in every group that the most people can say is "it's difficult"?

It's from the top at Amazon. A corporate culture of work them till they burnout/quit and replace.

There are shitty situations in any job. There are stressful situations in any job and shitty bosses in any job. Amazon is a high stress environment. If you can't handle that (without even tacking on the long hours or potential shitty boss) then keep looking. Now you could luck out and get someone great, but I don't think the odds are in your favor for that one.

I know of more than one former colleague that committed suicide while working at AWS. Coincidence maybe? But some teams/offices were brutal. My team was not awful but was starting to get that way. I would not trade a GS-14 job for Amazon.

I jest, and only because I know the jumper survived.

But mental health issues generally reflect on the individual not necessarily the workplace. Seattle has a lot of jobs so the jumper likely has less drastic options.

My dH had an opportunity to work there, but passed it up because it's a hell hole. He values family way too much to trade his kids for a paycheck.

Amazon wife here. Yes, the hours are crazy. Are you looking to go into the AWS DOD business in Herndon? If so I could give you more information.

My father is in front line management for Amazon. Not in VA. Totally no work life balance, insane hours, growing faster than they can handle. Pays 50% more than any other company would pay for that level of position though.

I used to work there. It depends on your job and your management. I had good balance at first, but after about 18 months it got crazy. We had a major management shakeup and the perks that kept me sane were starting to disappear so I ended up moving on. I regret moving on though and wish I had stayed just another year or so more.
